When we think of death, we don't often think of festive occasions. However, on March 31, 2007, more than 250 people attended a celebration of the publication of a new book, Mind Beyond Death (Snow Lion, 2007) by The Dzogchen Ponlop Rinpoche. Open to the public, this event attracted a broad audience of newcomers, curiosity seekers, old Buddhists, new Buddhists, neighbors, health care professionals, artists, scientists, and scholars.

Several guests mentioned that they were in attendance due to hearing Ponlop Rinpoche earlier that week, on Ron Reagan's 710 KIRO talk radio show in Seattle. Lynne Conrad Marvet, Co-Director of Nalanda West, served as emcee. Mark Power, a long-time student of Ponlop Rinpoche and chaplain at Children's Hospital, read several selections from the book to give folks a sense of the breadth and depth of the subject matter.

Ponlop Rinpoche then made some remarks about the importance of contemplating our fortunate circumstances in this life and encouraged everyone to make the most of their situation. He went on to say that from a Buddhist perspective, mind does not cease at death. One of the key themes in
the book is learning to work with one's mind, including methods for relating to thoughts and emotions, and how to develop more positive states of mind. You can read all about it in the book!

Prior to the program, tours of Nalanda West, a Buddhist study and meditation center, were given by volunteers. An elegant reception, book signing and Buddhist-inspired art sale followed the program and gave folks an opportunity to chat about the meaning of mind beyond death while enjoying the present moment.
