Dzogchen Ponlop Rinpoche Participates in International Council of United Nations Day of Vesak Conference
In May 2009, Buddhist scholars, practitioners, and teachers were invited to Bangkok, Thailand to participate in a ground breaking conference. Occurring during Vesak, the holiday that celebrates the birth, enlightenment, and parinirvana of the Buddha, the ICUNDV (International Council of United Nations Day of Vesak), along with the Thai Government and the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific, hosted a multi day conference in which various topics were discussed.
The ICUNDV, organized by Mahachulalongkornrajavidyalaya University in Bangkok, annually serves as an academic gathering of the world Buddhist community where leaders in the religion join to discuss Buddhism’s current state in the global society and various other topics pertaining to the faith. This year, the event centered on the topic of "Buddhist Approaches to the Global Crisis: Environment, Economic, Political Conflict and Peace Development". One of the topics discussed was the creation of a single book that contains Buddhist scriptures representing the three main traditions of Buddhism: Theravada, Mahayana, and Vajrayana. This project is known as the Common Buddhist Text Project. Dzogchen Ponlop Rinpoche was invited to help with the material and organization related to the Vajrayana.
