"His Geekiness" DPR Attends 'Buddhist Geeks' Conference

Buddhist Geeks, are not as the name may suggest, cosplay devotees decked in Shaolin monk robes or Jedi garb...they are instead the Western face of an eons old religion. They are teachers, psychologists, professional bloggers, scientists, lawyers, et. al. trying to reconcile and integrate an ancient and contemplative practice with a contemporary culture that seemingly values neither.

... Rebel Buddha is a strong candidate for dharmabook of the year, but the message could usefully be applied beyond the Buddhist fringe. After all, what religious, philosophical or scientific tradition has not been misused by the human psyche in this way? Forms and concepts are useful, if held with the lightness their insubstantiality deserves, but as soon as we squeeze them tightly, they begin to twist out of shape, becoming barriers rather than aids to waking up.

During a recent meeting of the Compilation Committee for the Common Buddhist Text Project that occurred December 18-19 at Mahachulalongkornrajavidyalaya University in Bangkok, Thailand, much progress was made toward the goal of creating a common Buddhist text.

Dzogchen Ponlop Rinpoche Participates in International Council of United Nations Day of Vesak Conference

In May 2009, Buddhist scholars, practitioners, and teachers were invited to Bangkok, Thailand to participate in a ground breaking conference. Occurring during Vesak, the holiday that celebrates the birth, enlightenment, and parinirvana of the Buddha, the ICUNDV (International Council of United Nations Day of Vesak), along with the Thai Government and the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific, hosted a multi day conference.

DPR Gives Address at Translating the Words of the Buddha Conference, Deer Park Institute

On Monday, March 16th, 2009, the Translating the Words of the Buddha conference began with an introduction by the conference chair, Dzogchen Ponlop Rinpoche, followed by statements from HH The Dalai Lama, HH Sakya Trizin, HH The Karmapa, and the late HH Mindrolling Rinpoche. These were followed by a keynote by Dzongsar Khyentse Rinpoche.

DPR Returns to Hong Kong in 2009

As DPR entered the filled-to-capacity shrine room of the Hong Kong Karma Kagyu Buddhist Society, the look on everyone's face said it all - one of sheer joy. The Karma Kagyu Buddhist Society is located in Wan Chai, at the heart of Hong Kong city, and was founded in 1980 by H.H. the 16th Karmapa. Ponlop Rinpoche, then aged 15, was attending His Holiness during this tour.

DPR Teaches at Hong Kong University and Karma Kagyu (H.K.) Buddhist Society during his 2008 Visit

Between January 9th and February 6th, 2008, Dzogchen Ponlop Rinpoche paid a visit to Hong Kong that was very busy and also extremely beneficial to his local students. Rinpoche has been making regular teaching visits to Hong Kong since 1989.

"Mind Beyond Death" Weekend Program in New York City

Rinpoche's book is as much about how to live than how to die or go beyond death. Rinpoche emphasized that we should be more concerned with how we live our lives in the NOW. By the time we are dying or dead it will be too late to compensate for lost time during our lives by relying on esoteric bardo practices.

Dzogchen Ponlop Rinpoche Offers Plenary Address
at Annual Meeting of the Association of Professional Chaplains

The audience included nearly 800 chaplains, a diverse group of professional spiritual caregivers, from around the United States. Rinpoche spoke on the topic of 'Facing Death - the Sacred Horizon,' which for many of the participants was their first introduction to a Buddhist perspective of death and dying.
